Google Plans to Invest $40 Billion in Anthropic

Google Plans to Invest $40 Billion in Anthropic

According to Bloomberg, Google plans to invest up to $40 billion in the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. Google had previously invested in Anthropic, but this latest move comes after the company announced a 5-gigawatt collaboration with Google and Broadcom for next-generation TPU capacity.

Google Increases Its Investments in Anthropic

According to Anthropic's statement, Google will initially invest $10 billion based on the current valuation. An additional $30 billion could be provided if certain performance targets are met. Furthermore, as part of Anthropic's commitment to using Google's TPUs and servers, Google is expected to provide 5 gigawatts of processing power by 2027.

Anthropic recently announced a similar collaboration with Amazon. In early April, Amazon stated it would invest $5 billion in Anthropic, with additional payments of up to $20 billion possible if specific goals were achieved. In return, Anthropic agreed to use Amazon's Trainium chips in its AI models.

Anthropic, a popular AI startup recently, had raised $30 billion in its latest funding round. This latest agreement is seen as an example of the cyclical deals frequently observed in the AI sector. Anthropic's use of both Google's and Amazon's hardware and infrastructure, receiving investments from these companies, and then spending a portion of those funds back on this infrastructure, is a model also seen among other major players like OpenAI, Nvidia, and Microsoft.
