Chinese automaker Wuling has officially launched its new SUV model, the Starlight 560. Available with four different trim levels, the model offers gasoline, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and all-electric powertrain options. The price range of $9,000 to $14,000 is quite remarkable for the Chinese market. One of the most prominent details is that the PHEV version offers a total range of up to 1,100 km according to WLTC standards.
Impressive Price-Performance Balance
The design of the Starlight 560 features distinct differences based on the engine type. While the gasoline and PHEV versions have a rectangular patterned front grille and a trapezoidal protective plate at the bottom, the electric version presents a simpler and more modern look with a completely closed front grille.
Pushing the boundaries of compact SUVs with its dimensions, the Starlight 560 measures 4745 mm in length, 1850 mm in width, 1770 mm in height, and has a 2810 mm wheelbase. Interior practicality is also one of the model's strong suits. The trunk volume is 320 liters, but it expands to up to 1,945 liters when the rear seats are folded down. The ability to fully recline the front seats and adjust the rear seatbacks up to 125 degrees is particularly noteworthy for long journeys and camping.
Looking at the engine options, the gasoline version comes with a 1.5-liter turbo engine. This engine, producing 174 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque, is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a CVT transmission. The PHEV version combines a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with an electric motor. The gasoline engine delivers 105 horsepower and 130 Nm, while the electric motor provides 145 kW of power and 230 Nm of torque. This version's pure electric range is stated as 125 km, with a total range of 1,100 km.
The all-electric version features an electric motor producing 100 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. Offered with 54.5 kWh and 56.7 kWh capacity LFP battery options, the model promises a range of 450 km to 500 km according to CLTC standards. The battery can charge from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes, and a 15-minute charge can add approximately 200 km of range.
With its affordable price, multiple engine options, and especially the claimed 1,100 km range in the PHEV version, the Wuling Starlight 560 stands out as one of the models poised to shift the balance in the Chinese market.
