Apple will unlock another feature on iPhones under the influence of the EU's Digital Markets Act. The tech giant will add Google Cast integration with the upcoming iOS 27 update.
A new report from Bloomberg suggests that Apple will add Google Cast integration, among other third-party solutions, to iOS 27 as it tries to escape pressure from the EU.
It is already possible to use Google Cast (also known as Chromecast) in iOS applications, but developers need to manually integrate it into their apps. iOS natively supports only one streaming protocol: Apple's own AirPlay. Third-party options like Miracast and Google Cast only work on an app-by-app basis.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is considering adding support for third-party AirPlay streaming alternatives to iOS 27. Apple will allow users to set alternatives as the default solution instead of AirPlay.
AirPlay has long been the native method for streaming to speakers, TVs, and Apple TV supported on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but Google Cast is much more widely used in many hotels, public spaces, and Android-powered homes. If Apple adds this support at a system level, users will not need each application to build its own solution. A Cast-enabled TV or speaker will appear as a native target within iOS, making media sharing more practical where AirPlay support is not available.
However, this change is linked to the European Union's Digital Markets Act. This means that Google Cast support may be limited only to iPhone users in Europe.
