Opel Announces Its Future: Astra and Corsa Are Being Completely Renewed

Although Opel remained in the background at the Stellantis Investor Day event, important details about the brand's future plans emerged. The company announced that it would invest over 1 billion euros in Germany by 2030, while also confirming the development of four new models. Two of these models will be built on Stellantis's new STLA One platform.

Among the new models are the next-generation Astra and Corsa, as well as the previously announced C-SUV model. This SUV will be developed in collaboration with the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, Leapmotor.

New Astra and Corsa Transitioning to STLA One Platform

Opel's next-generation Astra model will be one of the first vehicles to use Stellantis's new STLA One platform and will be produced at the Rüsselsheim plant in Germany. The new Corsa will also transition to the same architecture. Opel states that with this model, it aims to make electric mobility more accessible and attractive.

Both models are planned to be launched before 2030. However, technical details have not yet been disclosed.

Stellantis had previously announced that the STLA One platform would be introduced in 2027. This new modular architecture is designed to support different powertrains and various vehicle sizes.

Will Reduce Costs, Accelerate Development Process

One of the most important goals of the STLA One platform is to reduce production costs by 20 percent. Additionally, it aims to accelerate vehicle development processes and reduce technical complexity.

The platform, which will form the basis for B, C, and D segment vehicles, is planned to be used in more than 30 models globally.

The new architecture will also support cost-effective lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The platform, featuring an 800-volt electrical architecture, will offer faster charging times and higher energy efficiency.

Leapmotor-Powered Opel SUV is Coming

Opel's new C-SUV model will be introduced in 2028 and produced at the Zaragoza plant in Spain.

The model will utilize Leapmotor's platform and battery technology. However, it will feature Opel-specific suspension and chassis tuning, as well as brand-exclusive design details.

The new SUV is largely expected to be based on the Leapmotor B10 model. The B10 offers two different battery options: 56.2 kWh and 67.1 kWh. These batteries work in conjunction with a single electric motor producing 160 kW of power. The model's range can reach up to 434 kilometers depending on the version.

Range Extender Version Also on the Agenda

The Leapmotor B10 also has a range extender (EREV) version. In this system, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine works with an 18.8 kWh battery and an electric motor. This combination allows the vehicle to travel 86 kilometers on electricity alone. The total driving range can extend up to 900 kilometers according to WLTP standards.
