Europe's electric car market is performing above expectations in 2026. According to data from E-Mobility Europe, New AutoMotive, and Fier Automotive, 202,833 new fully electric cars were registered in 16 European countries in August. This figure represents a 54.2% increase compared to the same month last year.
Electric Car Sales Accelerate in Europe
The share of fully electric cars in new vehicle sales rose to 30.5% in August. Thus, approximately one in three new cars sold was fully electric. Across the European Union (EU), the market share of fully electric vehicles is projected to reach 31.2% in 2026.
In the first eight months of the year, 1,673,856 fully electric cars were registered across Europe. This figure indicates a 33.1% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The market share of fully electric cars in the January-August period was 22.5%.
According to the organizations that prepared the research, sales of fully electric cars alone have already exceeded the forecasts made for the broader plug-in vehicle market, which includes both fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
T&E had predicted a 23% market share for fully electric cars across the EU in 2026, while Rho Motion had estimated approximately 21% for Europe as a whole.
98.7% of New Cars in Norway are Electric
Germany and France stood out in the rise of the European electric car market. In France, 36,159 fully electric cars were registered in August. The share of these vehicles in total new car sales was 38.3%. In Germany, 68,980 fully electric cars were registered in August. The market share of electric cars in the country reached 32.5%.
In some smaller European car markets, the share of fully electric vehicles in sales reached much higher levels. According to August data, Norway ranked first with a 98.7% BEV market share. This rate was recorded as 85.9% in Denmark, 52.3% in Finland, and 48.9% in the Netherlands.
