Fire Risk in Electric Vehicles: Volkswagen Prepares for Recall

Fire Risk in Electric Vehicles: Volkswagen Prepares for Recall

Volkswagen is preparing for a recall due to detected manufacturing defects in the battery cells of some of its electric models. A charge limit of 80 percent is planned for the affected vehicles.

Volkswagen is preparing for a recall of some of its electric models in Germany and other European markets due to potential manufacturing defects in high-voltage battery cells. It is stated that certain cells could overheat, leading to a risk of fire in extreme cases. As a first measure, the company plans to limit the charge level of affected vehicles to 80 percent.

Which models might be affected?

According to the information, the investigation may include Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, and ID. Buzz models produced between 2023 and 2025, as well as several thousand Cupra Born vehicles. Skoda models are currently outside the scope.

While Volkswagen has confirmed that recall procedures will be carried out, it has not yet released a definitive list of which models and how many vehicles are affected across Europe. The scope is expected to be clarified based on production date, battery supplier, and cell batch.

Manufacturing defect detected in battery cells

According to Volkswagen's statement, the problem was discovered during the company's internal quality controls. It was determined that some battery cells used in certain ID. family vehicles did not meet quality standards due to supplier-related manufacturing defects.

It is stated that the affected cells could overheat in rare cases. As there is a risk of fire, the aim is to limit the charge level until a permanent solution is implemented.

The company plans to reduce the maximum charge level to 80 percent via an over-the-air (OTA) software update that will be sent to affected vehicles. Vehicle owners will receive additional information in the coming days.

Recall process started in the UK

In the UK, the process has already begun for ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, ID. Buzz, and ID. Buzz Cargo models. This action covers high-voltage batteries produced by a specific supplier between 2022 and 2025. Initially, an 80 percent charge limit will also be applied to these vehicles.

How the permanent repair will be carried out has not yet been clarified. It is anticipated that the high-voltage batteries or relevant cell modules of suspicious vehicles will be inspected at service centers. Therefore, it is not possible to say at this stage that all vehicles will undergo battery replacement.
