As competition in the field of artificial intelligence intensifies, Anthropic, one of OpenAI's biggest rivals, has announced a significant strategic decision. The company officially stated that its AI assistant, Claude, will not feature advertisements. It's worth remembering that last month, OpenAI announced plans to serve ads to its free and Go users.
No Ads on Claude
According to the statement from Anthropic, Claude users will not encounter sponsored links, ad-labeled content, or third-party product placements on their chat screens. Furthermore, Claude's responses will not be shaped by advertiser influence or directed by any commercial interest.
In a blog post, the company stated, "Our internet usage habits have led us to accept the idea that products inevitably contain advertisements. However, when you open a notebook, hold a quality hand tool, or stand before a clean blackboard, you don't see ads around. We believe Claude should be the same."
Revenue Model to Rely on Businesses and Subscriptions
The decision to steer clear of advertising also clarifies Anthropic's revenue strategy. The company plans to generate the majority of its revenue from Claude through corporate agreements, developer solutions, and paid subscriptions. To expand free access for individual users, the development of smaller-scale AI models and the offering of lower-cost subscription tiers, if demand arises, are on the agenda.
Anthropic's "no-ads" stance is not merely presented as a policy change; it is also being actively advertised. The company has prepared new commercials centered around the theme of "ad-free Claude," with some of these ads planned to air during the Super Bowl.
Two Different Approaches
Anthropic's approach can be seen as a positive step in terms of user experience and ethical principles. However, it may also bring risks such as sustainability issues and advanced models being accessible only through paid subscriptions.
In contrast, OpenAI recently announced its plans to include advertisements in ChatGPT's free and Go subscription plans, explicitly emphasizing that user data would not be sold to advertisers and that AI responses would remain independent of ads. Furthermore, it was stated that ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans would remain ad-free. In this regard, OpenAI's ad-supported model is seen as a balanced path with the potential to reach a wider global user base.
