Half of xAI's Founding Team Has Left the Company

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is experiencing a notable wave of departures. With the latest two announcements in the past two days, it has become clear that half of the company's 12-member founding team has left. The successive departures, especially within the last year, raise questions about the company's future.

Two Founding Members Bid Farewell Consecutively

On Monday night, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, one of xAI's co-founders, announced his departure from the company via a post on the social media platform X. Wu stated that it was time to open a new chapter in his career, emphasizing that small but powerful teams can create significant transformations with the support of artificial intelligence.

Just one day after Wu's announcement, on Tuesday afternoon, another co-founder, Jimmy Ba, also declared his departure. Ba, who worked directly under Elon Musk, thanked Musk in his post, expressed pride in the xAI team, and stated that he would maintain friendly ties.

While both statements carried the "amicable separation" messages common in the tech world, their timing and the overall situation within the company suggest these developments are more than just ordinary career changes.

With the latest departures, 6 of xAI's 12 founding members have left the company. Moreover, five of these exits occurred within just the last year. This situation implies that a significant portion of the individuals who shaped the company's founding vision are no longer part of the organization.

According to official statements, all departures occurred amicably. It might be considered natural for some founders to seek new opportunities after approximately three years. Elon Musk's intense and high-paced work culture is also a known fact in the tech world. Furthermore, the completion of SpaceX's acquisition of xAI and the planned initial public offering (IPO) in the coming months represent a significant financial gain for early team members.

However, other dynamics might be at play behind the scenes. The company's flagship product, the Grok chatbot, had recently been criticized for its unusual behavior and allegations of internal interference. Such issues, which could create tension within the technical team, might have influenced the decisions of these high-level individuals.
