May Come in Turkish: Metro 2039, Shaped in the Shadow of War, Announced

Metro 2039 has been announced. 4A Games' new title stands out with its dark story influenced by the war in Ukraine, and the production is set to arrive on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S this year.

Ukrainian developer 4A Games has officially unveiled Metro 2039, the latest installment in the Metro series. The game, developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, is planned to meet players this year. However, the new game stands out not only for its technical advancements but also for the impact of real-world conditions behind its development.

War changed everything

In its statements regarding the game's development process, 4A Games emphasizes that Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 "fundamentally changed" both the studio's working conditions and the game's content. A significant portion of the studio's employees are located in Ukraine, while the team is currently dispersed across 20 different countries.

The development team states that they continued the project despite challenges such as power outages, generator use, and missile and drone attacks. This process has directly influenced the game's narrative. According to 4A Games, Metro 2039's story is now much more sharply shaped around "choices, consequences, and the cost of securing a future."

The studio states that the previous message of the series was about preventing wars, but now that war has become a directly experienced reality, the narrative has evolved accordingly.

A darker era in the Metro universe

Metro 2039 takes place in a world approximately 25 years after a nuclear catastrophe. Survivors fleeing Moscow's poisoned surface struggle for survival in underground metro tunnels. In the new game, these scattered groups have united under a single entity called "Novoreich." At the head of this formation is Spartan Hunter, a well-known character from the series, positioning himself as a new leader, even a kind of "savior."

However, despite the appearance of unity presented on the surface, the underground order is remarkably oppressive. Propaganda, authoritarian rule, and violence are among the core dynamics of this new order.

New main character and gameplay details

In Metro 2039, players will control a new character named "The Stranger." This character, living a solitary life and plagued by violent nightmares, is forced to return to the metro tunnels he swore never to revisit. A notable innovation in the series is that the main character is fully voiced for the first time. 4A Games states that this change will enhance the depth and atmospheric impact of the storytelling.

The promotional footage also includes a short gameplay segment. Moments of escape and the struggle for survival indicate that the series' classic tension level has been further elevated in this production.

The Metro series is adapted from the works of Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. Glukhovsky was forced to leave his country after opposing Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Although Metro 2039 is not directly based on a specific book, it is stated that the author contributed to the project.

The development team explicitly states that while the game's narrative is influenced by the Ukrainian perspective, it still offers an authentic Metro experience.

Release date not yet clear

A definitive release date for Metro 2039 has not been shared yet. However, the game is planned to be released in the winter of 2026. The initial footage reveals a significant leap in both atmosphere and graphical quality compared to the series' previous game, Metro Exodus.

Metro 2039 will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Metro 2039 may come in Turkish

Alongside the radical transformation in the Metro series, another significant development is the possibility of Metro 2039 being released in Turkish. A post by Mustafa Kadir on social media stated that discussions were held with Deep Silver and positive feedback was received. Accordingly, it is indicated that Metro 2039 will be released in Turkish with a "99 percent" probability. On the other hand, no official statement regarding language has been made in Metro 2039's official announcements yet.
