Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Chairman Stefan Mecha confirmed: The popular pickup model Amarok is stepping into an all-electric future with fully electric and hybrid engine options in its 3rd generation.
The pickup segment is officially joining the electrification race in the automotive world. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has officially confirmed that the brand's popular pickup model, the Amarok, will receive a fully electric version with its third generation. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Chairman Stefan Mecha announced the electric Amarok news while explaining the brand's flexible engine strategy for the future.
Speaking to *Chasing Cars*, Stefan Mecha stated that a flexible powertrain strategy is needed to maintain competitive power in the market. Mecha said, "You need a flexible driving strategy that covers PHEV (plug-in hybrid) and fully electric vehicles. We have a clear plan for this, but it will apply to the next generation, not the current model."
The company emphasized that the current second-generation Amarok will continue with predominantly diesel internal combustion engines, reserving the electrification revolution for the third generation.
Will the Ford partnership continue?
The current second-generation Amarok is built on the Ford Ranger platform as part of a global collaboration between Volkswagen and Ford, and is produced at Ford's factory in South Africa. However, it is not yet clear whether the Ford partnership will continue for the new electric Amarok.
The current agreement between the two giants expires in 2029 or 2030. The third-generation Amarok is also expected to hit the roads around these dates. Stefan Mecha stated that discussions with Ford for the future are ongoing, but no final decision has been made, and different platform options are also on the table.
The future of pickup competition
The idea of a fully electric Amarok, first hinted at in 2022, has become a strategic necessity due to strict emission regulations in the automotive world and the rapid rise of Chinese manufacturers in the electric pickup market.
The new generation Amarok aims to offer an emission-free and high-torque driving experience to both business-oriented fleets and off-road enthusiasts with its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and fully electric versions.
