PlayStation Behind the Scenes: Why Shuhei Yoshida Left Has Been Revealed

PlayStation Behind the Scenes: Why Shuhei Yoshida Left Has Been Revealed

One of the most recognized executives in the gaming world, Shuhei Yoshida, took the helm of PlayStation Studios in 2008 and managed Sony's first-party game strategy for approximately 11 years. His surprising handover of this role to Hermen Hulst in 2019 might have been the result of a more painful process than anticipated. Remarkable details about his former PlayStation Studios career have been shared.

"I Refused Absurd Demands"

For those who missed it, Shuhei Yoshida worked at Sony for decades and served as a producer on many beloved PlayStation games such as Gran Turismo, Ape Escape, and The Legend of Dragoon. In 2008, he became the head of PlayStation Studios and played an active role in the development of major titles like God of War, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima during his tenure.

After being removed from his position, the veteran executive did not completely leave the company but continued to work in units supporting independent games, remaining with Sony until 2025. During his speech at the Australian gaming festival ALT: GAMES, Yoshida explained why he left his position as head of PlayStation Studios. The veteran stated that he was "fired for refusing the demands of PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan."

"In 2019, after 11 years at the head of the first-party development team, I was fired from this position. Jim Ryan wanted to remove me from the first-party development team because I didn't listen to him. He asked me to do some absurd things, and I said 'No.' Because I grew up with Jim since the PS1 days... You don't want one of your friends to be your subordinate."

What Yoshida referred to as "absurd things" or Jim Ryan's demands were not disclosed. However, we know that Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst spearheaded PlayStation's live service games, which ultimately led to the release of Concord, one of the company's most unsuccessful games. Especially considering the failed projects and closed studios, the company's approach in this area remains a subject of debate.
