US Threats Backfire: UK Tries to Snatch Anthropic

Anthropic, an increasingly powerful player in the field of artificial intelligence, has recently been in the spotlight due to tensions with the Trump administration. The company, which refused to allow the Pentagon to use its AI without any limitations, earned public admiration for its stance but also drew the ire of the Trump administration. Indeed, high-ranking officials from the Trump administration began issuing serious threats, such as blacklisting Anthropic. However, these threats might backfire, as the UK has stepped in for Anthropic.

UK Steps In for Anthropic

According to information reported by the Financial Times, the UK government is making various efforts to attract Anthropic to the country following the tensions with the US. In this context, proposals are reportedly being prepared for the company to expand its London office and even take more comprehensive financial steps, such as a dual stock market listing. These plans are also said to be supported by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. According to the Financial Times, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei will discuss this matter during his visit in May.

The Pentagon's classification of Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" for national security, leading to its blacklisting, could cost the US one of its most promising AI companies. On the other hand, this invitation from the UK is significant as it shows that companies resisting government impositions can find the space they desire in other countries. This is because artificial intelligence has now moved beyond inter-company competition to become an inter-country race.

However, Anthropic might not need to relocate to the UK or another country. A US court has temporarily halted the blacklisting decision and is scrutinizing the ruling. Anthropic's management could be vindicated at the end of this process. Nevertheless, the UK's desire to seize this opportunity is interpreted as a highly strategic move.

Post-Brexit, the UK aims to increase its global competitiveness in technology and finance. By attracting AI companies, it seeks to become a significant hub in this field. A stronger connection between a rapidly growing company like Anthropic, especially known for its approach to developing safe AI, and the UK could be a critical step towards this goal. Furthermore, it is believed that the Trump administration's withdrawal from Europe also plays a role in this move, as Europe may need to truly stand on its own feet for the first time in years.
