Estonian startup Rollo Robotics introduced the world's first balanced single-wheeled autonomous security robot, developed for real-world security patrols.

Estonian startup Rollo Robotics introduced the world's first balanced single-wheeled autonomous security robot, developed for real-world security patrols. Named 1ROLLO, the robot can patrol large areas such as industrial facilities, data centers, campuses, and airports without human intervention.

The company states that it has overcome the long-standing balance problem of single-wheeled robots with its self-developed stabilization system. Sebastian Agur, Co-founder of Rollo Robotics, stated that their goal is to make autonomous security patrols more economical, more flexible, and less distracting.

Stays Balanced with Gyroscope Technology

At the heart of 1ROLLO is a single wheel with a 60-centimeter diameter. The robot's balance is maintained by a high-speed flywheel placed vertically inside this wheel. The gyroscopic forces generated by the spinning flywheel keep the robot upright while moving, stopping, and traversing uneven terrain.

When it wants to change direction, the internal flywheel tilts, allowing the robot to lean into turns like a motorcycle. Data from high-frequency sensors is processed instantly by the company's control software, helping to maintain balance in windy conditions or on rough surfaces.

Can Reach Speeds of 30 km/h

Approximately 110 centimeters tall and weighing 45 kilograms, the robot can reach speeds of 30 kilometers per hour. The system can operate for up to 8 hours on a single charge and automatically returns to its wireless charging station when its battery is low, enabling 24/7 continuous operation. With IP65 certification, the robot offers resistance to rain and dust and can operate in temperatures between -20°C and 55°C.

Analyzes its Environment with Artificial Intelligence

1ROLLO continuously analyzes its environment using a 360-degree vision system, computer vision, and edge AI technologies. It can detect people, vehicles, open doors, and unusual movements.

Thanks to its RTK-GNSS based precise positioning system, the robot navigates pre-defined patrol routes with high accuracy. If it detects any anomaly, it sends instant notifications via 4G, 5G, or Wi-Fi to a cloud-based management platform. Operators can monitor live footage, communicate using the robot's speaker and microphone, or direct security teams.

Offers Advantages in Narrow Spaces

The company states that one of the biggest advantages of the single-wheeled design is its ability to move easily in narrow corridors, entrances, and crowded passageways. Thanks to the robot's modular structure, various equipment such as thermal cameras, PTZ cameras, night vision systems, and RFID readers can also be added.

Rollo Robotics plans to offer 1ROLLO through a subscription model instead of direct sales. The monthly fee will include hardware, maintenance, software updates, and future hardware upgrades. The company aims to begin commercial use within 2027.
