Intel Licenses Atom CPU Designs: A New Era for the x86 Ecosystem

It has been revealed that Intel is preparing a licensing agreement with the newly established RosaicLabs, covering the RTL design codes of Atom processors. This agreement will enable the architecture to be opened up to third parties.

It has been revealed that Intel is preparing a remarkable licensing agreement with the newly established technology startup RosaicLabs, covering the design codes of Atom processors. According to new information, the agreement covers the register-transfer level (RTL) codes of Intel's low-power Atom processors and is considered one of the company's most comprehensive licensing steps for the x86 architecture.

Reportedly, under the agreement, RosaicLabs will have the opportunity to develop new solutions based on Intel's Atom processor designs. Which Atom generation or processor core architecture is included in the agreement has not yet been disclosed. For those unfamiliar, RTL (Register Transfer Level) is known as the fundamental design layer in processor design that defines how data is transferred between hardware registers and logic units.

Access to designs at this level theoretically allows for the development of a new x86 processor or the construction of different solutions based on existing designs. Intel is not known for sharing its x86 processor designs with third parties, apart from its long-standing cross-licensing agreement with AMD. Therefore, this agreement is one of the company's most unusual licensing steps to date.

CEO Connection

Furthermore, RosaicLabs was founded just a few months ago in Delaware. The company's CEO is Amarjit Gill, who has worked with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan for many years. Gill and Tan previously served together at Rivos, a RISC-V-focused chip startup. Rivos's former CFO, Amit Parikh, is also part of RosaicLabs' management team.

According to the company's founding documents, it aims to raise approximately $10 million in its first funding round. Although the official purpose of the agreement has not been disclosed, industry sources suggest that RosaicLabs may aim to adapt the Atom architecture for new areas requiring low power consumption.

These areas could include edge computing, artificial intelligence systems, robotic platforms, and data center infrastructures. Currently, there has been no official confirmation of the agreement from either Intel or RosaicLabs. However, if the information proves true, this development could signal a significant shift in Intel's approach to opening up its x86 technology to third parties.
