OpenAI is preparing to re-implement the previously removed 5-hour limit for Codex and ChatGPT Work usage for ChatGPT Plus subscribers. The new limit will be effective starting August 25, and users will face a 5-hour limit in addition to their weekly usage cap.

5-Hour Codex Limit Returns

According to a statement by Thibault "Tibo" Sottiaux, OpenAI's engineering lead for Codex and ChatGPT, the company will re-introduce a 5-hour usage limit for Codex and ChatGPT Work in Plus subscriptions. OpenAI had temporarily lifted the 5-hour limit for Plus users over the past few weeks. During this period, users only encountered a weekly usage limit.

The company also celebrated user growth on the platforms by resetting weekly usage limits early at times. Under the new system, users will have two options when they reach either the 5-hour limit or the weekly limit: they can wait for the limit to reset or continue usage by purchasing additional credits.

OpenAI states two main reasons for re-introducing the 5-hour limit. Firstly, the short-term usage limit aims to distribute the computing load more evenly, thereby allowing Plus subscribers a higher weekly usage limit. The second reason is that a significant portion of Plus users are new or relatively casual users who utilize Codex and ChatGPT Work at a lower intensity.

According to the company, some users unknowingly exhaust their entire weekly usage rights quickly and then struggle to understand why they encounter limits. OpenAI will not apply the 5-hour limit to its $100 and $200 Pro subscriptions in the coming months. Therefore, Pro plans will currently have a different usage structure for users requiring high usage.

No changes have been announced for Enterprise and Edu subscriptions. These accounts currently use a separate credit-based usage system, different from Plus and Pro plans. With the new regulation, both a 5-hour and a weekly usage limit will apply to Plus users.
