Apple's new flagship, the iPhone 18 Pro, underwent the DXOMARK camera performance test. The model secured second place in the global camera rankings with a total score of 172 points. The iPhone 18 Pro also holds the same position in the ultra-premium phones list above $800, ceding the top spot to the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra.
iPhone 18 Pro Ranks Second in Camera Test
According to DXOMARK's evaluation, the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is at the top of the list with 175 points, creating a three-point difference between the two models. The score achieved by the iPhone 18 Pro also represents a four-point increase compared to last year's iPhone 17 Pro model. The iPhone 17 Pro's score of 168 points has now dropped to fifth place in the current rankings.
One of the most significant innovations in the iPhone 18 Pro's camera is the physical variable aperture system, consisting of six moving blades used in the main camera. The camera can change its aperture between f/1.48 and f/4.0 depending on lighting conditions and shooting preferences. DXOMARK states that this system particularly helps keep multiple subjects in focus more easily during portrait shots.
Furthermore, users can also manually control the aperture. While variable aperture technology is new for the iPhone, it has been previously used in some rival models like the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra. The iPhone 18 Pro's video score was announced as 176 points. This value represents the highest video score given to any phone on DXOMARK's list.
In low-light performance, the model scored 150 points. This is the highest result in DXOMARK's relevant rankings. The phone scored 157 points in portrait shots, while it received 138 points in the zoom test.
However, DXOMARK also noted some drawbacks for the iPhone 18 Pro. Color tone variations and occasional white balance shifts can be observed in some shots. The model lags behind some rival flagships in long-range zoom, and lens flare can occur under certain shooting conditions. Furthermore, brightness differences can sometimes appear between photo and video previews. DXOMARK has currently shared the scores and basic pros-and-cons evaluation, but a detailed written review has not yet been published.
