Netflix, which abandoned the Dungeons & Dragons series it announced approximately two years ago, is now working on a brand new Dungeons & Dragons series. The project will be live-action.
With its other adaptation released in 2023, and its connections to popular productions like Stranger Things and Baldur's Gate 3, Dungeons & Dragons has become more popular than ever. Netflix, perhaps aware of this, has greenlit a big-budget Dungeons & Dragons series. This live-action (non-animated) series will adapt Ravenloft, one of D&D's beloved settings, to the screen.
Netflix has actually been trying to develop a Dungeons & Dragons series for years. Different projects were announced previously, but none of them came to fruition. Indeed, The Forgotten Realms series, announced two years ago, has also been shelved. Netflix will instead try to bring this universe to the screen with the Ravenloft story. However, this series is still in its early stages, so it has not yet officially received a first-season order.
Dungeons & Dragons Series to be Produced by Alfonso Cuarón
This new Dungeons & Dragons series, which will be produced by Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men), will be developed by John August. August is known as the screenwriter for films such as Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Aladdin.
This series, which blends a fantastic adventure with gothic horror and a tragic love story, presents the world of the Dread Domains, full of dark magic and supernatural intrigues, through a character-driven narrative. At the heart of the story is the origin of the vampire dark lord Strahd von Zarovich, one of the most iconic villains in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The adventure chronicles Strahd's journey, shaped by power, love, obsession, and transformation into an immortal creature, revealing his evolution from a tragic anti-hero to a symbol of terrifying evil.
