EcoFlow is utilizing the panoramic roof of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y to generate solar energy with its HeatGuard Solar Film, developed for owners of these vehicles. The system does not charge the Tesla's main battery but instead recharges EcoFlow DELTA, RIVER, or other compatible portable power stations placed inside the vehicle using solar power. This offers a significant benefit, especially for camping enthusiasts.
Transforms the Vehicle into a Camping Platform
Thanks to the HeatGuard Solar Film, Teslas can be transformed into portable energy sources, especially for camping and extended outdoor use. The electricity generated by the solar panels is transferred to a power station inside the vehicle via a cable. This energy can then be used to power or charge a mini-fridge, laptop, phone, camping equipment, and other electronic devices.
EcoFlow aims for the system to accumulate energy over several days when the vehicle is parked during the week. According to the company's calculations, 3-4 days of sun exposure can generate enough energy to meet the needs of a weekend camping trip.
Compatible with Model 3 and Model Y
The HeatGuard Solar Film is offered with different capacities for the two Tesla models. The Model 3 version has a power output of 256 watts and 25 volts. It is stated to be capable of producing up to 1.3 kWh of energy per day under full sunlight.
The version designed for the Model Y achieves 290 watts of power and 28 volts. Under suitable conditions, daily energy production can reach up to 1.5 kWh.
The panels use N-Type TOPCon solar cells, offering up to 25% conversion efficiency. According to the company, the system can fully charge a 1 kWh power station in approximately 4 hours.
Preserves Aerodynamics, Reduces Cabin Temperature
One of HeatGuard's most striking features is its direct integration onto the vehicle's roof, unlike classic roof rack or rooftop solar panel installations. The panels are designed to conform to Tesla's curved panoramic glass roof, aiming to preserve the vehicle's aerodynamic profile. EcoFlow also states that the design does not create additional air resistance.
User experience supports this point. A YouTube user who used the system for about a month reported no noticeable loss in wind noise or driving efficiency.
Installation uses 3M VHB double-sided tape. This tape secures the system to the roof surface without requiring any drilling or permanent mechanical fasteners. EcoFlow states that it does not damage the car's paint or leave residue when removed.
It is also reported that HeatGuard not only functions as a solar panel but also helps reduce the vehicle's interior temperature. An air gap remains between the roof and the panel, which is said to be able to reduce the cabin temperature by more than 10 degrees Celsius.
In practice, a cooler cabin can help Tesla use its air conditioning less, thereby contributing to a reduction in energy consumed from the car's main battery for climate control. This, in turn, indirectly supports the vehicle's range.
A User Tested It for 30 Days
A YouTube user also shared their experience with how the system works. The user stated that they installed a system consisting of two separate panels on their Tesla Model 3, with each panel rated at 125 watts and 6 amps. The panels can be operated in series or parallel depending on the connection method.
It was observed that the system produced around 135-138 watts when the weather was hazy, and the panels reached up to 250 watts when the sun was fully out.
The user stated that the panels charged the portable power stations quite quickly and that the most significant advantage of the system is not having to set up any equipment before each use.
The system's price is $459 or $539 for the Model 3 and Model Y, respectively. When a battery to be placed in the trunk is also included in the system, the total price ranges from approximately $839 to $1,549.
