PC Games Now Run on Switch: Wine-NX Announced

Despite Nintendo's ongoing battle against Switch emulation, development in this area continues unabated. Following the shutdown of Yuzu, one of the emerging projects, Suyu, offers significant technical innovation, while another developer has announced the Wine-NX project, aiming to run PC games on the Switch.

Switch Games Will Run Faster on PC

Version 0.04 of Suyu, one of the successor projects to Yuzu, introduced a recompiler mode that changes how Switch games run on PC. This system directly converts the Arm64 (AArch64) code used by the Switch into executable files compatible with the x86-64 architecture used by PCs. Traditional emulation requires software-based imitation of the processor, graphics unit, sound system, and other console components.

The recompiler approach, however, involves pre-translating game code into native PC code, which can provide a performance advantage, especially in CPU-intensive games. However, Suyu's official open-source repository was recently archived, effectively halting the project. Despite this, the emulation community didn't wait long. A new team began developing Suyu's code via a fork and continued the project with version 0.0.10.

This Time, PC Games Are Coming to Switch

On the other side of emulation, a more striking development has emerged. Wine-NX aims to run older PC games developed for Windows on the Nintendo Switch. The project is based on a version of Wine 11 ported to Horizon, the Switch's operating system. The system attempts to run 32-bit x86 Windows programs on Switch hardware using the Box64 emulator within Wine.

Since Wine-NX runs as a homebrew NRO package on the Switch, it can only be used on modified consoles. In the project's current version, OpenTTD can run up to 60 FPS via OpenGL. Quake III Arena reaches approximately 30 FPS in HD resolution, while Need for Speed Underground 2 runs between 20–45 FPS using CPU overclocking.

Furthermore, the development team is working to improve WarCraft III support and enhance the performance of code translated by WineD3D. Thus, Switch emulation is not only bringing console games to PC but also starting to bring PC games to the console in reverse.
