Nintendo has released a new hardware revision for the Switch 2. The new model, dubbed Switch 2 V2, comes with some hardware and maintainability changes, but it appears to offer no improvements to the console's most criticized feature: its screen.
What does Switch 2 V2 offer?
It will be recalled that last summer, it was revealed that Sharp was working on a new LCD panel for the Nintendo Switch 2. The current model's screen is particularly criticized for its response time. The panel, which has a response time approximately 50 percent slower than the original Switch model, can cause a noticeable ghosting effect in fast-moving scenes.
A technician disassembled the new Switch 2 V2 model and compared it with the first model. The examination between the V1 model (code BEE-CPU-01) and the V2 model (code OSM-CPU-01) revealed the use of the same Nvidia chip revision and 12 GB of RAM. Additionally, the V2 model features a different component supplier, a revised motherboard, a different fan design, and a new user-replaceable battery.
These changes appear to be aimed at improving the console's manufacturing process and repairability. However, no significant upgrade in graphics performance or cooling was detected. Therefore, there is no evidence that the new model has a faster GPU, more RAM, or a more powerful cooling system.
New screen panel not used
According to the initial review, the Switch 2 V2 is not the model that uses the new Sharp LCD panel revealed in the summer. This means that the console's screen response time and ghosting issues currently persist. However, as the technician only examined a single V2 device, it is not certain that all new models use the same screen panel. There is a possibility that some devices may use different panel suppliers or the new Sharp panel.
For now, the Switch 2 V2 is considered a hardware refresh focused on manufacturing and repairability rather than a performance upgrade. Therefore, there is no strong reason for existing Switch 2 owners to upgrade to the new model for performance or display improvements.
