AK Party Signals Retreat on Overseas Shopping Regulation

AK Party Signals Retreat on Overseas Shopping Regulation

The regulation published on January 7, 2026, and set to come into force on February 6, 2026, abolished the customs exemption applied to overseas orders under 30 Euros. A detailed customs declaration will now be required for all products brought from abroad.

Exceptions May Be Introduced for Technologically Necessary Products

AK Party Deputy Chairman and Party Spokesperson Ömer Çelik made statements regarding this regulation, which drew public reaction. Çelik hinted that exceptions could be made for products used for technological development, stating, "In exceptional cases where there is a technological necessity, some new evaluations can be made. The door for this is open."

When asked about the repeal of the article that exempted orders under 30 Euros from customs duty, Çelik stated that this step was taken to prevent unfair competition. Ömer Çelik used the expressions, "These are steps taken for consumer safety and health, product safety, and the prevention of unfair competition. The Ministry of Trade is showing the necessary sensitivity regarding excessive pricing, and these are being monitored."

The Era of Cheap Overseas Shopping is Over

Previously, overseas purchases under 30 Euros from platforms like Temu, AliExpress, and Amazon could be easily bought with a "simplified customs procedure" by paying 30-60% tax. As of February 6, 2026, customs duty will need to be paid and a detailed customs declaration will be required for all overseas purchases. In addition to customs duty, extra fees such as customs declaration service fees, warehousing, and consultancy will be charged for orders to be delivered. In this new period, additional costs amounting to thousands of liras will arise for a 100 TL product, varying by product type. This situation will completely end the era of cheap overseas shopping.
