TSMC's Clear Message to Intel: Competition Cannot Be Achieved by Just Throwing Money

C.C. Wei, CEO and Chairman of the world's largest semiconductor foundry manufacturer, TSMC, made striking statements regarding Intel Foundry's recent accelerated investments and technological moves. While acknowledging Intel's progress in manufacturing, Wei emphasized that success in advanced chip production cannot be achieved solely through large capital investments.

TSMC is confident

Wei stated that TSMC is not concerned about the increasing competition, highlighting that the company has grown in an intensely competitive environment for decades and relies on its experience in this field.

TSMC has further strengthened its position as the foundry market leader, especially thanks to customers focused on artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. However, increasing demand and capacity limitations are creating new opportunities for competitors like Samsung and Intel Foundry. At this point, Intel Foundry stands out with its ambitious plans, particularly regarding the 18A and 14A manufacturing processes.

Speaking at an earnings call, C.C. Wei stated that competitors like Intel cannot surpass TSMC simply by making large investments. C.C. Wei conveyed that he is "not worried" about Intel's progress, saying that competitors cannot easily beat TSMC by "pouring capital" into advanced chip processes.

According to Wei, the key determining factors in advanced manufacturing processes are the proper setup of production lines, the certification of partners' designs, and the creation of sufficient and sustainable capacity for external customers.

Intel's 18A and 14A optimism

On the other hand, Intel Foundry has recently attracted attention, especially with its Panther Lake platform. This architecture, built on the company's self-developed 18A manufacturing technology, is seen as a significant step that solidifies Intel's goal of becoming a serious player in the foundry sector. Furthermore, it is known that the 18A-P and 14A processes have attracted the interest of industry giants such as Apple, Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm. While this interest has not yet translated into firm orders, Intel is highly confident in this area.

Meanwhile, C.C. Wei's remarks are not solely directed at Intel's investments. It is known that the US had pledged $8.9 billion, Nvidia $5 billion, and Softbank $2 billion in investments.
