It is alleged that Ford is in talks with Chinese automotive giant BYD for battery supply for its hybrid models. The potential collaboration aligns with the brand's new strategy, which is shifting its focus from electric to hybrid vehicles.
According to The Wall Street Journal, one of the options being considered in the discussions is the shipment of BYD-branded batteries to Ford's production facilities outside the United States. While no agreements have been signed yet, the form of the partnership is becoming clearer as scenarios are defined.
If the deal goes through, Ford will secure direct supply from China's largest automaker, which stands out with its cost advantage, high production capacity, and experience in battery technology. This move perfectly aligns with Ford's recently announced new roadmap, which aims to slightly scale back investments in fully electric vehicles and place greater emphasis on hybrid models.
The American manufacturer announced last month that it would shift its focus from purely electric vehicles to hybrid powertrains. Ford's goal is for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric models to account for approximately half of its global sales by 2030.
This potential agreement is, in fact, a step that will further strengthen the ties between the two brands. Since 2020, Ford has been using BYD batteries in some models produced in its joint venture with state-backed Chinese automaker Changan. This past collaboration provides a solid foundation for the new agreement.
