Massive Firefox Update: Free VPN, AI Controls, and More

Massive Firefox Update: Free VPN, AI Controls, and More

Mozilla has announced a series of new features and updates to be added to the browser with the Firefox 149 release. The most significant announcement is the built-in free VPN. Here are the details:

Mozilla has announced a major Firefox update coming in the next few weeks. The update adds a free built-in VPN, split-screen feature, tab notes, and expanded AI controls. According to Mozilla's post on March 17, a visual refresh and a new mascot are also part of the broader rollout.

Free VPN

The Firefox 149 release adds a free built-in VPN that routes browser traffic through a proxy to hide IP addresses and location data. Mozilla states that the feature is built according to its data principles and will not require additional downloads or third-party add-ons. However, it will initially be available in specific countries (America, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom) and will have a monthly data limit of 50 GB. Mozilla has not provided details on pricing or availability for users outside these countries, nor whether the data limit will change later.

Split View and Tab Notes

Split view will allow two web pages to be displayed side-by-side in a single browser window, making it possible to compare content or text between pages without switching tabs. This feature will be available with the Firefox 149 update on March 24.

Tab notes will provide the ability to add notes to individual tabs as a way to keep track of context while multitasking. This feature will be available in Firefox Labs 149, Mozilla's optional experimental features section, starting March 24.

New AI Controls and Smart Window

Firefox is adding detailed controls to its generative AI features, allowing users to individually toggle AI-powered features on and off. Mozilla describes this as giving users control over which AI tools are active in their browser. The Smart Window feature, replacing AI Window, will provide contextual assistance during browsing, including definitions, article summaries, and product comparisons, without leaving the current page. Smart Window is optional and currently in early access waitlist phase.

Redesigned Settings Menu and Navigation Improvements

Firefox has also updated its Settings section with improved navigation and search to facilitate customization. Mozilla states that these changes will be available in Firefox Nightly starting in April, before being rolled out to all users.

Visual Refresh, Themes, and New Mascot

Firefox has updated themes, icons, and visual styles across its toolbars, menus, and homepage. Mozilla states that these changes are based on user feedback and aim to give the browser a more modern look. Additionally, a new mascot named Kit will be introduced as part of the rebranding.

Mozilla's Firefox 149 release will be available on March 24.
