Microsoft has been taking steps to simplify the gaming experience on Windows for some time. In the latest iteration of this approach, the phrase "Xbox Full Screen Experience" in the Xbox app has been replaced by "Xbox mode". The update will gradually roll out starting in April.
Xbox Experience for Windows 11 is Being Renewed
Microsoft is making a significant change to the full-screen Xbox interface it has been testing for a long time. The company will now offer the structure previously called "Xbox Full Screen Experience" under the name "Xbox mode." The new naming is not limited to just a name change. Xbox mode offers a controller-focused gaming interface for Windows 11.
This full-screen interface allows users to perform actions such as navigating the game library, launching games, accessing the Game Bar, and switching between applications without needing the classic desktop experience. At the same time, users can still return to the standard Windows desktop when needed.
This experience first came to light on June 8, 2025, with the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X models developed in collaboration with ASUS. At the time, the system was described as an Xbox interface specifically for handheld devices. Subsequently, Microsoft did not limit this experience to handheld devices only.
In November, the feature was also made available to various Windows 11-based handheld consoles, and is now preparing for a broader rollout to include desktop and laptop computers.
