Although Microsoft started the artificial intelligence race from an advantageous position thanks to its investment in OpenAI years ago, today even OpenAI struggles to cope with increasing competition, making it impossible to speak of such an advantage or superiority for Microsoft. On the contrary, the company's initiatives in the field of artificial intelligence have not yielded the expected results so far. Although the company is making great efforts to make Copilot more widespread, these efforts are not yet producing the desired outcome.
These difficulties in the field of artificial intelligence have raised questions about the company's future, leading Microsoft to make this issue a priority. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has initiated a comprehensive restructuring process within the company, dubbed "Copilot code red." The primary goal of this move is to significantly improve the performance and user experience of Microsoft's AI-powered assistant, Copilot.
Microsoft aims to reverse this weak perception of Copilot and plans to accelerate the process with new products and features. As part of this, the company's E7 package will be launched on May 1st, and new capabilities will continue to be added to Copilot throughout the year.
Microsoft Allocates Cloud Capacity to AI
Microsoft's AI investments are not limited to Copilot. The company's cloud platform, Azure, is also at the heart of this transformation. In the last quarter, approximately 30% of new cloud capacity was allocated to internal projects such as Copilot and large language model development. The rapidly increasing demand for artificial intelligence, especially the rise in token usage and GPU costs, could continue to support Azure's growth. This indicates that Microsoft's AI investments could positively impact revenue in the long term.
From a financial perspective, Microsoft remains in a strong position. A free cash flow margin of approximately 20% shows that the company can continue to invest and sustain its growth. Additionally, the potential to manage infrastructure costs more balanced through "neocloud" partnerships strengthens Microsoft's hand.
Microsoft's "Copilot code red" initiative can be seen not just as a product update, but also as an effort to redefine the company's position in the artificial intelligence race. If Copilot's performance improves and Azure's growth continues, Microsoft could regain investor confidence and achieve a stronger competitive position. However, the speed and effectiveness of the steps taken in this process will be one of the most critical factors determining the company's future direction.
