The Chinese government is implementing a comprehensive green transformation plan to reduce the environmental impact of artificial intelligence-related data centers. Prepared by four state agencies, including the National Energy Administration and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the program aims to increase the use of clean energy in data centers.
Comprehensive Transformation Target by 2030
Under the new plan, the share of renewable sources in data centers' electricity consumption will be significantly increased. The strategy, which includes a total of 29 different measures, specifically aims to make the growing energy demand of the rapidly expanding AI sector more sustainable.
China's move is seen as consistent with its carbon emission reduction targets and is considered an important part of the country's strategy to strengthen its technological infrastructure with environmentally friendly policies. According to the plan, not only will renewable energy use be increased, but diesel backup power systems used in data centers will also be replaced with cleaner energy solutions. China also aims to more actively utilize domestic AI chips in its energy infrastructure.
