A significant development has occurred for AV2, the next-generation video codec standard developed by the Alliance for Open Media. According to updated change logs in AOMedia's AVM repository, the final version of the codec standard could be released on May 29, 2026.

Final Release Date for AV2 Leaked

The shared logs contain the phrase "2026-05-29 v1.0.0," and this version is directly defined as "AV2's first published release." Thus, the AV2 standard is now very close to its official final stage after a long development process.

Previously, AOMedia had targeted the end of 2025 as the release date. The new date indicates that the process has been delayed by approximately half a year. AV2, developed as the successor to the AV1 standard, is expected to offer significant improvements in compression efficiency. It will also provide more advanced support for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) use cases.

It has also been confirmed that the codec standard will bring significant enhancements in areas such as split-screen streaming, screen content processing, and a wider range of visual quality. The final technical documents are not yet fully published. However, the draft version of the AV2 Bitstream and Decoding Process Specification is currently accessible.

On the other hand, the completion of the AV2 standard may not immediately translate to widespread adoption in the short term. It can take years for hardware manufacturers to integrate new codec support into their devices. Similarly, Intel introduced AV1 hardware acceleration on its Tiger Lake platform approximately two years after the standard's release in 2018.
