Google and SpaceX Discuss Building Data Centers in Orbit

Google and SpaceX Discuss Building Data Centers in Orbit

Google is considering collaborating with SpaceX as part of its plan to establish space-based data centers. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, if the discussions between the two companies yield positive results, two major rivals in the technology world could unite on the same project.

Google's initiative, dubbed "Project Suncatcher," stands out as a long-term project exploring the feasibility of orbiting data centers. Google first announced this project last November. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, while announcing the merger of SpaceX and xAI in February, stated that one million data processing satellites could be sent into orbit in the future.

According to the news, Google is not only in talks with SpaceX but also with other rocket companies. The company is also working with Planet Labs for the design and production of satellites.

Interest in the Space Data Center Idea is Growing

Both Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Elon Musk believe that moving data centers to space will be inevitable in the future. Pichai, in an interview last November, stated, "I believe that within the next decade, establishing data centers in space will become normal." Musk, on the other hand, argues that satellite systems will be the cheapest way to generate AI processing power within a few years.

However, experts point out that this vision faces serious technical challenges. It is noted that intense cosmic radiation in space could increase the error rate of GPUs, and operating cooling systems in the vacuum of space is extremely difficult. Furthermore, placing millions of satellites in low Earth orbit could have negative impacts on the atmosphere and make space traffic more risky.
