Google has officially shut down Project Mariner, its experimental artificial intelligence project capable of performing actions on the internet on behalf of users. The official Project Mariner page states that the service was terminated on May 4, 2026, and the technologies developed within the project have been transferred to other Google products.
Introduced in 2024
Google first announced Project Mariner in December 2024. Unlike traditional chat-based AI systems, the project offered an infrastructure capable of actively performing actions on the web. It possessed abilities such as understanding user commands, navigating websites, completing specific tasks, and executing multi-step processes.
The company later updated the project, enabling the system to perform 10 different tasks in parallel simultaneously. This step garnered significant attention, especially in processes like online reservations, information gathering, and account management.
Although Project Mariner has ended as a standalone product, the developed infrastructure has not been entirely discarded. In fact, Google began integrating Mariner technology into various AI services over the past year.
Leading these integrations is Gemini Agent. Google's next-generation AI tool can perform actions on behalf of users, such as archiving emails, making hotel reservations, or completing various online tasks. It is stated that the company largely powers these features with the agentic AI infrastructure developed by Project Mariner.
Additionally, Google has incorporated Mariner's web-actionable capabilities into AI Mode, its AI-powered search experience. This aims to enable users to perform direct actions through AI, rather than just searching for information.
While Project Mariner has reached its end, new announcements from Google are expected in the coming days. The company's annual developer event, Google I/O 2026, will commence on May 19, and new AI features and services are anticipated to be introduced at the event.
