Samsung continues its aggressive moves to strengthen its position in the foundry business. According to a new claim, the company is currently trying to make MediaTek a client for chip production.
According to reports from Taiwan, Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong made a secret visit to Taiwan on May 21 with a delegation of senior executives. One of the most important items on the agenda of the visit is stated to be a meeting with MediaTek CEO Cai Lixing.
Samsung makes a move in the foundry business
Samsung, after recently securing Tesla’s AI6 chip order and attempting to persuade AMD for its 2nm manufacturing process, now aims to win over MediaTek. It is said that the company is leveraging not only its production capacity but also its strength in memory. It is rumored that Samsung could offer MediaTek advantageous DRAM and HBM memory access for future-generation Dimensity processors. This strategy is reminiscent of the methods Samsung previously used to attract Qualcomm to its foundry services.
Recently, it is claimed that the relationship between MediaTek and TSMC is not as smooth as it once was. Especially after Google chose MediaTek as a key design partner for its 8th generation TPU AI chips, the dynamics began to shift. MediaTek entrusted the advanced packaging work for the inference-focused TPU version to Intel, while continuing to work with TSMC for the training-focused version. This situation is believed to create a suitable opportunity for Samsung's plans to attract MediaTek to its side.
Despite Samsung's significant progress in chip manufacturing recently, it still lags behind TSMC in terms of production efficiency, customer trust, and advanced packaging technologies. However, Samsung's aggressive pursuit of customers in the 2nm race indicates that competition in the semiconductor industry will intensify further in the coming period.
