Microsoft's gaming strategy might be undergoing a redefinition. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma stated in a recent interview that the company is evaluating different options regarding its Xbox exclusive game policy. Sharma's remarks could signal a renewed focus on the "exclusive" approach, which has weakened in recent years.
Xbox Strategy is Changing
It will be recalled that Microsoft recently brought many Xbox games to the PlayStation platform and adopted an approach that sought to remove console boundaries with its "This Is An Xbox" campaign. However, this strategy was heavily criticized, especially by Xbox users. Players began questioning why they should buy an Xbox console if Xbox games were coming to rival platforms.
Asha Sharma stated that no major changes to the current policy would be made for now, but that all options are being evaluated. Sharma also added that the decisions made would affect not only the short term but also the next 10 years. Furthermore, Sharma had previously announced the halt of Copilot projects on the console side and argued that Xbox needed to return to a "player-centric" identity.
Microsoft currently faces two different paths. The company will either continue its existing multi-platform approach or make some major titles exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem again. In the coming months, the future of Xbox's hardware, as well as which games will remain exclusive, seems likely to become a more prominent topic. Especially with the Game Pass strategy, how exclusive games will be positioned will be one of the most important issues in Microsoft's new era.
