The competition among electric vehicle manufacturers is now extending to AI-powered humanoid robots. Following Tesla's Optimus and Xpeng's Iron project, BYD is also preparing to showcase its first humanoid robot named "Xiao Di" to the public. Although the company has not yet confirmed official technical details, leaked information and previous statements from executives clearly outline BYD's ambitions in the field of robotics.
Could Be Introduced in August
The development came to light with a brief promotional image published on the WeChat account of BYD's Di Space experience center in Zhengzhou. The post, which was later removed, indicated that the company would unveil its humanoid robot for the first time in early August.
Since Di Space is one of BYD's physical centers focused on science, technology, and product experience, the introduction is expected to feature a working prototype rather than just a concept demonstration.
According to information shared on social media, which has not been officially confirmed, Xiao Di will be approximately 160 centimeters tall and weigh 59 kilograms. The robot is said to be capable of more fluid and precise movements thanks to a motion system with 31 degrees of freedom distributed across its hands, legs, torso, and neck. Its hands are claimed to be able to grip objects weighing 1 kilogram with approximately 1 millimeter accuracy.
On the perception side, it features a 360-degree vision system and an AI infrastructure capable of real-time 3D modeling of its surroundings. This enables the robot to recognize complex objects, human faces, hand gestures, and lip movements.
Could Become a Sales Consultant
BYD Vice President Stella Li previously stated that she aims for two or three humanoid robots to be deployed in every BYD dealership in the future. According to Li, these robots will be able to greet customers, explain vehicle features, conduct product demonstrations, and make the showroom experience more interactive.
Li also expressed that humanoid robots for home and service sectors will create a large market for BYD, and robot sales consultants could reach practical use within the next one or two years. Meanwhile, UBTech Robotics' humanoid robots are already in use at a BYD factory.
