Microsoft Explains the Cause of Xbox Access Issues

Microsoft has officially shared the reason behind the Xbox access issue that affected millions of players worldwide on July 27th. The company announced that the outage was caused by a malfunction in a license verification service that operates independently of the Xbox infrastructure. Due to this problem, players were unable to launch games they had purchased, log into their accounts, or make new purchases.

The Source of the Problem: License Verification System

Scott Van Vliet, Xbox CTO, stated that the malfunction affected the "entitlement check" system, which verifies users' rights to access purchased content. This system ensures the verification of games and content owned by users as part of digital rights management. The malfunction not only affected players but also game publishers working with Microsoft. Business partners using the same infrastructure experienced problems managing their games and related services.

Microsoft announced that its support team quickly identified the issue and isolated the faulty service from the rest of the network. Traffic was redirected to other operational servers, and Xbox services were gradually restored. This meant that users in some regions gained access to services earlier, while others experienced longer waiting times.

Microsoft Will Take New Measures

Scott Van Vliet stated that having a single point of failure for a platform of this scale is unacceptable. The company announced that it is working on various infrastructure improvements to make systems supporting login and game launch processes more resilient and to respond more quickly to similar outages.

It is worth noting that this outage occurred during a period when the gaming industry is increasingly shifting towards digital distribution. Especially in a time when the future of physical games is being debated, the failure of online license checks, preventing users from accessing their purchased content, has caused significant concern among players.
