Microsoft's new compatibility layer developed for Xbox PC has successfully run Xbox 360 games that are not officially offered. It possesses a broader potential than expected.
Microsoft's recently announced "Xbox Backward Compatibility for PC" initiative continues to draw the attention of the developer community. According to newly emerged tests, the company's Xbox compatibility layer developed for PC will not be limited to officially released games.
Xbox 360 support is already working
The XWine1 team successfully managed to run various Xbox 360 games by combining Microsoft's Xe03 (Fission) compatibility layer, used in the new PC version, with the SlimEra component developed for the Xbox One compatibility project. Titles such as Plants vs. Zombies, Steins;Gate: My Darling's Embrace, SSX 3, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles were reported to launch with varying levels of success in the tests.
According to the shared information, Microsoft's Xe03 software emulates the Xbox 360 runtime environment used in the backward compatibility system of Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Original Xbox games are loaded via a separate Xbox 360 emulator running on this structure. Of course, the system currently requires Microsoft's released compatibility files, SlimEra components, and manual configuration.
However, this development does not mean that all Xbox or Xbox 360 games will run flawlessly. Microsoft's backward compatibility system includes game-specific patches, configurations, and emulator files, so it may require additional adjustments or might not work at all.
Microsoft recently released BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fusion Frenzy as part of Xbox Backward Compatibility for PC. While the company has confirmed that more classic Xbox games will come to PC in the future, there has been no official announcement for Xbox 360 games yet.
