Electric vehicle giant BYD has opened its 10,000th flash charging station in Shenzhen, China. The company aims to expand its massive network, which offers charging in 9 minutes, to 20,000 stations by the end of the year.
BYD, one of the biggest players in the global electric vehicle market, has passed another historic threshold in its self-built charging infrastructure. The company, which commissioned its 10,000th flash charging station at a ceremony held at the station located in the Longhua district of Shenzhen, China, solidified its title as the automaker with the widest geographical coverage and fastest-growing charging network in China.
The BYD flash charging network, which extends beyond major metropolises to the farthest corners of the country, had surpassed the 5,000-station mark on April 1st. The company achieved a massive operational success by doubling its station count in less than 5 months.
Daily Target of 80 Stations and 1,500 kW Power
BYD announced that it maintains its goal of reaching a total of 20,000 charging stations by the end of 2026. To achieve this goal, the company needs to install an average of 80 new stations per day during the remaining 4 months of the year. Of the planned 20,000 stations, 18,000 will be established through partnerships with charging network operators, and 2,000 will be directly located along highway routes.
Although less than 6 months have passed, over 210 million kWh of electricity has been distributed through the BYD flash charging network, serving more than 1.83 million drivers. Approximately one-third of the users benefiting from the network are owners of electric vehicles from other brands.
The Chinese manufacturer, which has partnered with major groups such as Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC, Teld, and JD.com, is also exporting its flash charging network to the global market. BYD has established its first stations in the UK and plans to operate 300 flash charging stations in that country by the end of the year.
