Skoda's most preferred model, the Octavia, celebrates the 30th anniversary of its modern generation's production start. The first modern Skoda Octavia rolled off the production line at the Mlada Boleslav factory on September 3, 1996. Approximately 7.9 million units of the Octavia have been produced across four generations to date.
Playing a significant role in the brand's development, the Octavia became one of Skoda's main models for international growth by combining spacious interior, practical features, safety technologies, and affordability. Today, the fourth-generation Octavia is produced at the Mlada Boleslav and Kvasiny factories, as well as in Kostanay, Kazakhstan.
A Historic Name Reborn in the Modern Era
While the name Octavia dates back to the model produced between 1959 and 1971, the historic name was revived with a new car developed in the 1990s. Development work for the modern Octavia began in 1992, one year after Skoda joined the Volkswagen Group.
The design of the car, developed with new technologies, was carried out by Dirk van Braeckel, Skoda's Head of Design at the time. Concurrently, with the commissioning of a new production facility in Mlada Boleslav, Skoda's annual production capacity increased from 90,000 to 350,000 units.
The first-generation modern Octavia, with a 528-liter trunk capacity, was introduced on April 4, 1996, and its mass production began on September 3, 1996. The Octavia Combi joined the product range in March 1998. In 1999, the introduction of the all-wheel-drive version further increased the model's versatility.
The year 2000 marked the beginning of a new era in Octavia's history with the introduction of the first performance-oriented Octavia RS. While the total production of the first modern-generation Octavia reached 1.44 million units, production of some versions continued until 2010, even after the second generation was introduced in 2004.
Approximately 7.9 Million Units Produced Across Four Generations
The second-generation Octavia further advanced the model's core features such as spacious interior and practicality. While trunk volume was increased, new technologies like the DSG dual-clutch transmission were also added to the product range. By 2013, when the production of the second generation ended, 2.6 million Octavias had rolled off the assembly lines.
The third-generation Octavia, produced between 2012 and 2020, brought advanced driving assistance technologies, previously offered mainly in upper-segment cars, to users. The third-generation Octavia underwent a comprehensive refresh in 2017. The model gained a distinctive look with split front headlight design, and glass-designed infotainment screens and improved driving assistance systems were also introduced.
The Octavia's Success Story Continues
The current fourth-generation Skoda Octavia was introduced in November 2019 with Sedan and Combi options. Refreshed at the beginning of 2024, the model was further improved in terms of safety and technological features. The current Octavia offers up to 10 airbags, including 8 standard ones in our country, as well as advanced driving assistance systems.
Having reached four generations and immense production figures in 30 years, the Octavia continues to be one of the most preferred Skoda models for both individual and corporate customers today. To date, the model has received numerous prestigious awards in various countries, including "Best Car" and "Golden Steering Wheel."
