New Images of National Combat Aircraft KAAN: Flight Tests Begin with New Prototype
A critical phase is being entered for Turkey's indigenous and national combat aircraft, KAAN. Taxi tests for the KAAN P1 prototype have begun, with flight tests scheduled to commence soon.
New images of the KAAN P1 prototype, the indigenous and national combat aircraft whose development efforts are ongoing by TUSAŞ, have been shared, and it was announced that pre-flight taxi tests have started. The first flight test of KAAN's initial prototype, P0, was conducted in February 2024. Subsequently, some design changes were made to KAAN, and a much more advanced system architecture was adopted. Tests to be carried out with KAAN's P1 and P2 prototypes will lead to the final version of KAAN.
Flight tests for the KAAN P1 prototype are expected to begin in the coming weeks, while those for the KAAN P2 prototype will start towards the end of the year. Thanks to the multi-prototype system, numerous flights will be conducted simultaneously, and the development process will continue with the data obtained.
KAAN is planned to be delivered to the Air Force Command by the end of 2028. The initial production aircraft will use F110 engines developed by the American company General Electric. To date, 10 F-110 engines have been delivered to Turkey for use in prototypes. Obstacles to the sale of 80 engines by the U.S. to Turkey have been removed, and the congressional review process has been completed. Positive developments are expected in the coming days. The first delivery of the KAAN powered by U.S. engines is planned for 2028, with a version powered by the indigenous TF35000 engine to be implemented starting from 2032.
