SpaceX is preparing to build a massive space base spanning approximately 506 square kilometers on the southern coast of Louisiana, USA, to increase the launch capacity of its giant Starship rocket. Construction for the facility, named "Starbase Louisiana", is planned to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch targeted for 2029.
Thousands of Starships to be Launched
Starbase Louisiana will cover an area eight times larger than Manhattan. According to the company's plans, Starbase Louisiana will eventually reach a capacity to perform thousands of Starship launches annually.
The design shared by SpaceX shows the facility will feature five separate launch complexes, each with two launch pads. The base also plans to include a fuel production facility, electricity generation infrastructure, facilities for preparing Starship vehicles, and housing for employees and their families.
The company aims to transform the facility into a largely self-sufficient spaceport. This will involve establishing various units such as methane fuel production, energy generation, and vehicle processing infrastructure. An airport is also likely to be added to the facility.
First Launch in 2029
Construction of the project is aimed to start in 2027, with the first Starship launch scheduled for 2029. The Louisiana facility will be SpaceX's fourth launch center in the United States.
Unlike the existing Starbase facility in Texas, Starbase Louisiana will not host Starship production. The new center is expected to primarily focus on launch, preparation, and logistics operations. Starbase Texas is currently the only active launch site for Starship.
Company CEO Elon Musk places Starship at the center of his plan to expand Starlink and, in the future, deploy 1 million AI satellites into orbit. The location of the new facility provides an advantage for this goal. Starship can be launched from here southward, over the Gulf of Mexico. This route facilitates reaching sun-synchronous orbits, which are particularly suitable for solar-powered satellites.
SpaceX also plans to utilize the region's natural gas resources to produce the methane-based rocket fuel used by Starship. The company's "Starmind" satellites, developed for orbital AI data centers, are also expected to utilize this launch infrastructure.
