14 years and $1 billion don't seem to have been enough for the Star Citizen team to release a finished game. The Squadron 42 game, expected to be released this year, has been delayed once again.
Star Citizen, which has been in development since 2012 and has collected over $1 billion from supporting players during this period, still hasn't delivered a finished game. The single-player game Squadron 42, touted as Star Citizen's story mode, should have filled this gap years ago. However, like Star Citizen itself, it is constantly being delayed. The latest announcement stated the game would be released in 2026, but this date was, of course, not adhered to. Cloud Imperium Games management announced that the game will not be released in 2026.
The reason given by the studio for this latest delay was GTA 6. The company management states that Squadron 42 is ready, but they decided to delay it because they don't want to compete with a title like GTA 6, which would dominate game sales. If this statement is true, then there is no obstacle for the game to be released in the first half of 2027. However, at this point, the studio's credibility has become questionable. Therefore, if the game doesn't release in 2027 either, it won't be a surprise to many.
