Xiaomi has launched its first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device in China, the Xiaomi Smart Storage. The device, which offers high storage capacity, HyperOS integration, and 4K media playback support, promises a comprehensive storage solution for home users.
What does Xiaomi Smart Storage offer?
The Xiaomi Smart Storage comes equipped with WD Red Plus hard drives. The entry-level 4 TB model, which includes two 2 TB drives, is priced at 2,699 yuan (approximately $401). The 8 TB model sells for 3,499 yuan ($520), and the 16 TB model for 5,499 yuan ($818). Users can later upgrade the drives to increase the total capacity to up to 60 TB.
The aluminum-bodied Xiaomi NAS uses an active fan system to keep drive temperatures under control. The device features 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. Connectivity options include 2.5 GbE Ethernet, USB-A 3.0, and HDMI 1.4. Thanks to the HDMI output, the device can be directly connected to a television or monitor and play 4K resolution video at 30 Hz, eliminating the need for a separate media player to watch media content.
One of the most important features of Xiaomi Smart Storage is its integration with the Xiaomi ecosystem. On Xiaomi phones running HyperOS 3.0 or a newer version, the NAS automatically appears in the phone's built-in file manager.
The device can create full backups of phones and also back up data from specific applications like WeChat histories. Furthermore, it's possible to store footage from compatible Xiaomi security cameras directly on the NAS. The system can perform local video recording for up to four cameras simultaneously.
The device also serves as a local hub for Xiaomi's Mi Home smart home ecosystem. By processing smart home automations on the device instead of the cloud, it aims to provide faster responses to commands.
On the software side, Xiaomi has also included advanced media management features found in traditional NAS solutions for the Smart Storage. The photo application can locally group images by face and location information. Users can also find specific photos using text-based searches. For video files, the system can automatically add movie posters, production names, and rating information by utilizing file names.
The device can be accessed remotely via dedicated applications on iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows. Xiaomi provides up to 40 Mbps of free bandwidth for remote access. Additionally, 16 separate user accounts can be created on the NAS.
The Xiaomi Smart Storage comes with a three-year warranty, but it is not yet clear whether it will be available in markets outside of China at this stage.
