Apple Announces iPhone 18 Pro's Repairability Score

Apple Announces iPhone 18 Pro's Repairability Score

Apple has announced the repairability data for its new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, in accordance with European Union regulations. According to the data released by the company, the new models are slightly easier to repair compared to the previous generation iPhone 17 Pro series.

Compared to iPhone 17 Pro

Today, the European Union requires smartphone manufacturers to evaluate their devices according to specific criteria. This evaluation considers various categories such as the device's disassembly level, fasteners used, necessary tools, spare part availability, software update duration, and access to repair information.

Each category is scored between 0 and 5, and these values are combined to create an overall repairability index. The overall repairability index for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max was announced as 3.14. For the iPhone 17 Pro series, this value was 3.04. Thus, the new models show an increase of 0.10 points.

Looking at the categories, the most significant change is seen in the tools used section. The score in this category increased from 2.05 to 2.55. The score for the depth of disassembly also rose from 2.65 to 2.75.

There are no changes in other categories:

  • Fasteners: 3.80
  • Tools: 2.55
  • Spare parts: 4.00
  • Software updates: 1.00
  • Repair information: 5.00

Apple's documents do not provide detailed information on which components led to the improvements in tools and disassembly processes. However, different or easier-to-use tools might have been provided for accessing certain parts.

iPhone 18 Pro Series Still in Class C

The overall design of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro series appears similar, and repair procedures are largely carried out in the same way. Nevertheless, Apple's new models are classified as Class C in the A to E classification. Changes in the internal structure of the devices will be revealed in more detail through teardown analyses by iFixit.

A review and teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to be published shortly after their sales date on September 18. Apple has not yet shared similar repairability data for its iPhone Duo model, as the device is not yet available for pre-order.
