Lexar Unveils the World's Thinnest Portable SSD

Portable SSDs and magnetic batteries used with smartphones are quite useful, especially for users who shoot videos or back up files on the go. However, the large and bulky nature of these accessories can become a significant disadvantage when using the phone. Lexar aims to solve this problem with its new portable SSD model, Muse.

What Does Lexar Muse Offer?

The Lexar Muse measures only 80 x 48 x 3.8 mm. The company states that the device is the world's thinnest portable SSD. Thanks to its curved and tapered design on the edges, the SSD aims to feel even thinner than its dimensions suggest.

To achieve such a small size, Lexar uses its proprietary SnapLink connection system instead of a standard USB cable. This system, consisting of magnetic connection and pogo pins, allows the cable to be directly attached to the back of the SSD.

However, the design also comes with some compromises. The pogo pin connection on the back of the SSD appears thicker compared to the device's extremely thin body. Additionally, users who want to magnetically attach the device to their phone must first place the SSD in a special case. This case's design also appears to be usable as a cardholder.

Using a 10 Gbps USB connection, the device can achieve read speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s, according to Lexar's data. However, it is not yet known how high the write performance of the SSD can be during long-term use within such a thin body.

Thanks to its USB-C connection, the Muse can be used with iPhones, Android phones, Mac computers, and Windows PCs. Lexar also offers app support for iPhone users, enabling automatic backup of captured images.

The Lexar Muse will be available in two capacity options: 512 GB and 1 TB. The SSD is planned to go on sale in the last quarter of 2026. Official prices have not yet been announced. However, according to information provided by company representatives at IFA, Lexar is targeting a price of approximately $230 for the 512 GB model and approximately $380 for the 1 TB model.
