According to a blog post penned by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Nvidia is acquiring artificial intelligence platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion. The deal, if approved by regulatory bodies, will further strengthen the company's position in the artificial intelligence sector.
Nvidia will thus maintain its dominance in AI hardware while integrating one of the most important platforms for open-source AI software into its structure.
Huang stated that following the acquisition, Nvidia will focus on scaling the Hugging Face platform, strengthening its infrastructure, and expanding access to artificial intelligence.
Nvidia Pledges Open Source
Hugging Face can be described as a type of GitHub focused on the field of artificial intelligence. Developers can share, discover, and test AI models on the platform. Today, Hugging Face hosts 3 million AI models, 1 million applications, and 500,000 datasets. The platform is reportedly used by over 18 million developers.
The most important question regarding Hugging Face's future after the acquisition is whether the platform's open structure will be preserved. Jensen Huang gave a clear message on this matter, stating that Hugging Face will remain an open platform.
Furthermore, developers will not be obliged to use Nvidia products when using Hugging Face. Huang also highlighted Nvidia's significant contributions to the open-source AI ecosystem, noting that the company has already published over 500 models and 250 open datasets on the Hugging Face platform.
