Spotify announced that 40 million users have shared over 340 million messages on the platform. The company also unveiled new features to allow users to share music without leaving the platform.
Spotify has announced the introduction of its new Messages feature, which will allow users to see what their friends are listening to in real-time and send requests to start Jams, the app's collaborative listening feature.
See What Your Friends Are Listening To with Spotify's Listening Activity
With the Listening Activity feature, you can share the music you're currently listening to and see what your friends are playing. If you're not listening to anything, Spotify shows your most recently played song. This feature is not enabled by default; you can choose to turn it on. However, if you don't share your listening activity, you won't be able to see what others are listening to either. Spotify also adds that Listening Activity will only be visible to people you have messaged previously.
To see what your friends are listening to, open the sidebar and check the Messages section. By tapping on a friend, you can react to the music they're listening to, add the song to your own library, or play it instantly.
You Will Be Able to Send Jam Requests
Another newly announced feature is sending Jam requests. You can send a request for a collaborative listening session by messaging a person. Afterward, each participant can add songs to the playlist and browse a list of recommended songs tailored to each person's taste.
Rolling Out to Premium Users
Spotify states that the Listening Activity and Jam Request features have started rolling out to Premium users in countries where messaging is available. Free users can also join Jam sessions, but only after receiving an invitation from a Spotify Premium user. All these features will be available to users aged 16 and over.
