The Ministry of Family and Social Services and the Ministry of Justice are working on a law that will prohibit social media use for children under 15 and mandate identity verification for all profiles. Prior to this law, the Personal Data Protection Authority (KVKK) launched an investigation into six social media platforms to examine the protection of children's personal data on social media.
According to the statement from KVKK, investigations have been initiated into the following platforms:
- X
- TikTok
- YouTube
- Discord
The inclusion of Discord, which currently faces an access ban in Turkey, has raised expectations that the platform may become accessible again in the future.
Why was the investigation launched?
The investigation will examine how children's personal data is processed on social media platforms and what measures are taken to protect them from potential risks they may encounter in the digital environment, with due regard for the best interests of children in their social media use.
