Apple to Cut Back on Screen and Processor for iPhone 18!

Apple to Cut Back on Screen and Processor for iPhone 18!

Apple gained appreciation for the improvements it applied to the standard model in the iPhone 17 series, but this situation seems set to change with the iPhone 18. The company is reportedly planning to use older screens and chips to reduce costs.

Apple's iPhone 18 is not expected to be released until early next year. Leaks regarding the phone suggest that it might not come with significant upgrades compared to the iPhone 17. According to a new supply chain report, the gap between the standard iPhone and iPhone Pro models will widen even further this year compared to previous generations, especially concerning the screen and processor.

iPhone 18 Pro and Foldable iPhone to Feature New OLED Panel

Apple is expected to use Samsung Display's latest M16 OLED panels in the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will miss out on this upgrade. The company plans to use older screens, including the M14 and a customized M12+ panel, in the more affordable models of the series. The M12+ panel is an improved version of the M12 architecture, offering slight enhancements in brightness and efficiency. However, it lags behind newer generations like M13, M14, and M16 in overall performance.

If the leak proves accurate, the iPhone 18 will be launched with display technology several generations older than that used in the Pro models. The M12 architecture was previously used in models like the iPhone 14 Pro. Meanwhile, the entire iPhone 17 series from Apple features the M14 panel.

iPhone 18's Processor Also Expected to Disappoint

To avoid increasing the iPhone 18's price, Apple will cut back not only on the screen but also on the processor. Although the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e feature the A19 chip, the 'e' model comes with a lower-performing version, offering four GPU cores compared to the iPhone 17's five cores. While the A20 chip will certainly be better than last year's A19, there might be a larger-than-expected performance drop compared to the A20 Pro.

When Will the iPhone 18 Be Introduced?

The iPhone 18 is expected to be released months after the iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple's usual autumn iPhone launch is anticipated to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra. The iPhone 18e, iPhone 18, and iPhone Air 2 are likely to be released in the spring of 2027.
