MediaTek Dimensity 9600 to Pioneer with Two "Prime" Cores

MediaTek Dimensity 9600 to Pioneer with Two "Prime" Cores

While rumors surrounding Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset are just beginning to surface, information regarding MediaTek's new flagship processor, the Dimensity 9600, has also started to emerge.

Dimensity 9600 to Feature Two "Prime" Cores

According to the leaked information, the Dimensity 9600 will be developed using TSMC's 2nm (N2P) manufacturing process. However, the most notable change might be in the processor's core architecture. Claims suggest that the chip will adopt a new 2+3+3 core arrangement, meaning it will be supported by two "prime" cores and six high-performance cores.

If this proves true, the Dimensity 9 series will be the first to feature a dual "prime" core design. For comparison, the Dimensity 9500 includes a single ARM C1-Ultra core clocked at 4.21 GHz, three ARM C1-Premium cores running at 3.5 GHz, and four ARM C1-Pro cores at 2.7 GHz.

According to leak source Digital Chat Station, this dual "prime" core structure in the Dimensity 9600 is internally codenamed "Canyon." On paper, this new architecture could offer more robust performance, especially in increasingly complex artificial intelligence tasks. Combined with the new manufacturing process, a significant performance increase is expected compared to the previous generation.

On the graphics front, the Dimensity 9600 is rumored to come with a new GPU featuring neural network shader technology. This will enable more efficient cooperation between the GPU and NPU, providing smoother performance and reducing power consumption.

Meanwhile, the competition is not standing still. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is also rumored to adopt a similar 2+3+3 core arrangement. However, while Qualcomm's solution relies on its self-developed Oryon cores, the Dimensity 9600 is expected to utilize ARM's new Cortex-C2 series cores.
