Apple has sent an urgent update to iPhones running iOS 18. The new iOS 18.7.7 version arrives at a time when a new chain of vulnerabilities, known as DarkSword, is becoming increasingly widespread.
Apple today released new iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7 versions, likely containing a fix for the DarkSword vulnerability. Previously, this was limited to iPhone XS and XR models; it is now available for other iPhones as well.
iOS 18.7.7 Rolled Out to All Devices
Apple released new versions of iOS 18 to protect its users from DarkSword, but these updates were only offered to iPhone models that cannot install iOS 26. The update came as iOS 18.7.7 for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and iPad (7th generation), and iPadOS 18.7.7 for compatible iPads.
Devices Will Update Automatically
There are also iPhones that have not been updated to iOS 26 despite supporting it. These devices remain exposed to the DarkSword vulnerability, as the last iOS 18 update for all iPhones was released in December and carried the version number iOS 18.7.3. Therefore, today's iOS 18 update (regardless of whether it supports iOS 26) is still available for all iPhones running iOS 18. Apple states that devices with automatic updates enabled will be updated automatically.
iPhone Users in Turkey Also at Risk!
DarkSword has been used by hacker groups to infiltrate iPhones of individuals in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Ukraine. It was also published on the open-source code repository GitHub, making it easier to access.
