OpenAI recently introduced its new artificial intelligence model called GPT-5.5. The company describes this model as its "smartest and most intuitively usable system" to date. While the new model offers enhanced capabilities across numerous fields, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman stated that GPT-5.5 brings the company one step closer to its "super app" goal.
One of the most striking aspects of the new model is its processing efficiency. Officials state that GPT-5.5 can think faster and more sharply by using fewer tokens. This feature means that more advanced AI capabilities will become more accessible for both individual users and corporate clients.
The Super App Vision is the Goal
The "super app" concept, one of OpenAI's long-standing major goals, has been brought back to the agenda with GPT-5.5. This vision, previously articulated by Greg Brockman and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, envisions the unification of tools like ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI-based browser into a single platform.
The aim of this approach is to offer a versatile digital assistant experience for both individual and corporate users. It also creates an indirect area of competition with Elon Musk's plans to transform the X platform into a "super app."
In terms of performance, GPT-5.5 was announced to offer significant improvements over previous models. According to the company's shared test results, the model achieves higher scores in many metrics compared to rival systems like Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro and Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.7.
The model is particularly noted for its excellence in enterprise AI applications, agent-based coding processes, and information processing tasks. Mark Chen from OpenAI's research team stated that GPT-5.5 is more proficient in computer-based workflows than previous versions. According to Chen, the model is capable of providing meaningful progress in scientific and technical research processes, supporting expert researchers.
It is also stated that it can be used in fields with high technical requirements, such as drug discovery. While the role of artificial intelligence in such scientific processes has been steadily increasing in recent years, GPT-5.5 is expected to further accelerate this trend.
OpenAI announced that GPT-5.5 was made widely available as of Thursday. The model is being rolled out gradually to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users via ChatGPT. Additionally, the GPT-5.5 Pro version is being distributed to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.
